(1) Following the non-arrival of two boys last year because they say they weren’t told, I suggest you insist that they confirm their intention to attend with you. Obviously I need to know ASAP if a boy cannot attend. (2) I suggest arrival for Game 1 players and replacements is no later than 0915 – so all can register, change and be ready to go by 0930. For the second game arrive no later the 11.15. (3) This year there has been unprecedented difficulties due to cancellations because of rain, with some counties affected more than others. This has meant research and the inclusion of a few boys to ensure that the elite pathway process is not jeopardised. (4) Replacements: We have planned to see a number of the replacements, but not all; some are involved to cover injury or absence. It is essential that replacements understand that, and are encouraged to acknowledge that they have done well to get to the trial as a replacement; a large number of boys have not even achieved that. (5) Importantly, we are asking replacements to stay for both games. Indeed, it will help if all players stay for the day so that the Divisional Team Manager can speak to the boys who will be invited to the two Development Days (13th and 16th Dec). Further, history shows that if a lad plays in the first game for a half and keeps warm he might be asked to play a part in the second game when injuries occur; so a message to that effect might be useful – if they stay changed ask them to let me know they are on stand by. (6) Finally, it is crucial that I make the point: Despite what they may think, the games will be more intense than they have experienced. Playing the day before will present risks. Boys should be urged to give themselves their best chance of divisional selection – which is a major step towards selection for England. Regards – and thanks for all you have done to support the elite pathway over the very busy period of the games – I hope your players appreciate it as much as we do. David Turner
